When W Architecture architects Barbara Wilks and Alexandros Washburn converted this old tobacco drying facility into townhouse lofts, their vision was to contribute to a more sustainable community in downtown Durham while respecting the city’s architectural heritage. Their approach to urban design combined both architecture and landscape architecture in a fusion of ecology and urbanism. When they undertook Trinity Lofts, Wilks and Washburn also had existing links to the community: Washburn is an alumnus of UNC Chapel Hill, and they had recently designed the Hill Building at the American Tobacco Campus.
At Trinity Lofts, Wilks and Washburn preserved a great deal of the original building while adding features to take advantage of natural light and to minimize heating and cooling costs. In addition, while no two lofts are the same, many of Trinity’s town homes feature rain barrels and bike garages.
Our Neighborhood
Our neighborhood is a hub of sustainable living.
- Stone Brothers & Byrd, a locally owned home and garden business two blocks away, provides much of our yard and garden needs
- Common Ground Green Building Center is just three blocks away. Common ground is an amazing resource for healthy, eco-friendly materials for enhancing and personalizing your Trinity town home
- The Durham Farmers Market is also just three blocks from Trinity. The Farmers Market is a community of local farmers, growers, crafters. Every item at the market is sold by the person who produced it, and no Market item comes from more than 70 miles away.
- The Scrap Exchange – also just blocks away – is a nationally recognized artist cooperative with the mission of promoting creativity and environmental awareness through community reuse.
Our Homes
Trinity townhouses are generally 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms on two floors with 22+ high feet ceilings and incredible natural light. All of the units feature the original floor and wooden beams of the facility, and many feature original brick work. Units on the Washington side have industrial gardens while those on the west side of the building feature Juliet balconies or full porches.
The Trinity Lofts community is both quiet and vibrant – a great group of Durhamites (some born and bred, some by choice) from different walks of life. The townhouses are on the very edge of downtown and Duke University’s east campus – walkable in five minutes or so, bikeable in even less. We are also very close to Duke’s west campus, Duke Hospital, and Durham Regional Hospital.
